In this post, it's all about Cape Town and its surroundings. It actually might be one of my favorite destinations.
It's a charming city that was smaller than I expected, which made it easy to connect with people. Plus, as a surfing enthusiast, I appreciate the great surfing spots available.
Without further ado, here are my top activities and places to visit in and around Cape Town:
Top tips:
Join in for sunset volleyball at the Clifton Beach (every Thursday at 5 pm but not in the winter months) A group of volleyball enthusiasts organise a weekly match on the beach that's open to everyone. Even if you don't like volleyball, you can still have a great time having a picnic or drinks on the beach and mingling with other people. Bo Kaap is a colorful part of the city center and makes for a perfect photo location. Just be a bit careful in this area since it's not the safest place in Cape Town but normally totally fine to visit during the day.
Muizenberg Beach and Bloubergstrand are fantastic surfing spots. I recommend Atlantic Surf School for lessons.
Stellenbosch is a great place for wine tours. We booked the cheapest one on GetYourGuide and had a fantastic time visiting three luxurious wineries (which were absolutely affordable despite being really luxury). Our driver was exceptional and made the trip even better. Another even cheaper way to do it is through the wine tram. You will have to take an uber to Stellenbosch (best to do it in a group for more fun and to split the uber costs) and from there you can drive with the hop on hop off tram between stunning vinyards.
Hike up Table Mountain to reach the Diving Board. Me and my friend started at the Kirstenbosch National Botanic Garden and hiked up via the contour path waterfall. The hike can be challenging, but the path up is not dangerous.
Lions Head is another beautiful hiking spot. Although not as long as Table Mountain, it can be scarier with a steep climb towards the end. However, the view on top, especially during sunrise or sunset, is breathtaking. It is just normally very crowded
Boulders Beach is home to penguins, and the beach next to it is great for swimming as the water is calm and clear.
Cape Town hosts festivals on the countryside almost every month. I went to the Origin Festival, which had a great vibe with techno music. For more infos follow instagram pages like: Origin, intothewildexperience and temporary events
Mojo Market is a food hall with live music, perfect for grabbing drinks and enjoying delicious food. La Parada restaurant at the V&A Waterfront is also worth a visit.
If you're into vintage clothing, Observatory has a great selection of vintage stores on the main road.
If you have a bit more time you can look into doing the garden route or parts of the garden route (The Garden Route is a glorious 300-kilometre / 190-mile stretch of coastline in South Africa. It runs from the small town of Mossel Bay (Mussel Bay) to the mouth of the Storms River and takes in places of outstanding natural beauty along the way, like George, Knysna (pronounced 'Nighs-nah') and Plettenberg Bay) You can do this either by car (a lot of solo travellers would like to do this route so you have a good chance of finding a group of people who will rent a car with you) or with a bus called the Baz Bus
Atlantis dunes are dunes not far away from Cape Town (around 50 mins). Here you can do activities like Sandboarding and Quadbike
I hope you found my list helpful! Cape Town is an incredible destination that you won't regret visiting.
